SAFE HOUSE FOR ANIMALS
ABOUT US
Safe House for Animals (SHFA) is a dedicated rescue and rehabilitation animal shelter committed to helping animals in distress by providing them with safe and healthy spaces for feeding, treatment and rehabilitation. Once they reach here, abandoned, mistreated or neglected animals get a nurturing environment and the best possible care, love and attention so that their health improves and they live with dignity.

SHFA currently provides care and support to approximately 115 resident animals, mainly consisting of dogs and cows. Additionally, the Out Patient Department (OPD) offers free medical treatment to injured or distressed animals, including birds, that are brought to the shelter. The shelter is also home to numerous puppies who have lost their parents due to accidents and calves abandoned at birth since they are considered economically valueless to humans.

In addition to resident animals, SHFA ensures the well-being of over 200 street dogs in Gurgaon (Haryana) and 60 street dogs in Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) through daily feeding and care.

SHFA is a key project supported by The Care and Compassion Society (CACS). The endeavour is to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds and age groups who are passionate about creating a world where animals are free from cruelty and inhumane treatment. We are a community-driven organization, run by members to provide a unified and influential voice for the cause of animals in India.
OUR INITIATIVES

FEEDING STREET DOGS
Our commitment to feeding stray dogs has continued steadfastly for the past 7 years and has been further intensified in response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. As an outreach activity, we provide nourishment for nearly 200 dogs in and around Gurgaon. Every morning, our team embarks on a feeding mission, starting from Palam Vihar to various locations such as Maruti Industrial Area, Sector 50, Sector 46, Sector 29, HUDA City Centre, Signature Tower, Kadipur Industrial Area, Gurgaon Court and the Administrative Complex and other areas closer to Delhi border. In addition, we also ensure the daily feeding of over 25 dogs in the vicinity of our shelter.

RESCUE & REHABILITATION
Since the establishment of the shelter, we have been operating a free-of-charge Out Patient Department (OPD) to cater to the healthcare needs of cows and dogs. The OPD operates daily from 6 am to 6 pm and serves animals from approximately 15 neighbouring villages. The majority of beneficiaries that avail of our free OPD services come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We focus on the holistic care of our patients, beyond their immediate rescue and clinical treatment. We are committed to rehabilitating the animals and providing them with a safe haven at our shelter until they fully recover and can be successfully reintegrated into their natural environment.

VETERINARY SERVICES
Through the years, people from villages nearby have been frequently bringing their animals for treatment and availing the veterinary services that SHFA provides. Once the animals receive the necessary care and medical intervention, they go back to their homes. In cases where frequent check-ups are required, people bring their animals to the OPD on a daily basis. Our OPD also offers free vaccinations to the animals in our care. As a standard practice, all shelter animals are vaccinated every year. This helps in saving their lives from life-threatening conditions such as rabies and canine distemper. SHFA also performs the very important function of sterilization of the dogs thereby strengthening the Animal Birth Control policy of the Government of India.

ADVOCACY
Our founder, Saptarshi Roy, possesses valuable legal expertise as well as field activism in the realm of animal welfare in India. Leveraging this knowledge, he has filed numerous applications under the Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005, primarily focused on addressing the plight of animals within the country. These RTI applications have been submitted to 22 municipal corporations nationwide, seeking information regarding the status of stray pigs and their care and rehabilitation. Furthermore, in the states of Kerala and Karnataka, he has filed RTIs with municipal corporations and SPCAs (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), specifically concerning the methods employed for the sterilization of street dogs. Surprisingly, major cities such as Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram lack dedicated dog sterilization centres, which has been a revelation. Saptarshi has also filed many cases against animal cruelty in the courts of Gurgaon, Hissar and Mewat thereby saving hundreds of camels and buffaloes from illegal trafficking.
